As a curry connoisseur, I have to say I have almost tried all of the best Indian restaurants in Glasgow, including the four that were chosen to represent Glasgow in the Curry Capital of Britain awards last year, KoolBa, Slumdog, Kama Sutra and Neelim.
I am a big fan of both KoolBa and Kama Sutra; they both provide that authentic Indian atmosphere and intense spicy taste that I love. However, neither one of them is actually my favourite Indian restaurant in Glasgow; that’s a title that’s reserved for the one and only Mother India’s Café.
Mother India have opened quite a few restaurants in both Glasgow and Edinburgh now, and won the title Best Indian Restaurant in Scotland in the Scottish Restaurant Awards 2010 for their Edinburgh restaurant, but it’s the café at Kelvingrove that has won my heart.
I think it’s the innovative nature of this restaurant that I really admire. Unlike most Indian restaurants, the Mother India Café serves food in Spanish tapas style. This means that instead of having to choose just one meal, you get to try several. You can share food with your loved ones, which I find makes for a really enjoyable and sociable experience. I’d almost say that it actually feels more natural to eat this way.
There is no sensation of having first service and second service, no feeling of having to quickly clear up courses and clear out, and you can mix your dishes as you please. Someone who has a small appetite can feel comfortable to eat just a little, while someone with a large appetite can happily eat loads without having to delve into someone else’s plate. It’s friendly, fun, and best of all this tapas-style Indian cuisine just so happens to be some of the very best in the whole country.
